CoHDL 0.8.1: Parser Recovery
and Faithful Footprints

Malformed source returns bounded diagnostics, source geometry survives export, and the ICS-43434 microphone keeps its acoustic opening clear in KiCad.

Compiler v0.8.1 was released on . This post fills a gap in our release coverage.

Malformed input must finish

In 0.8.0, a stray comma in a device or trait body could leave the parser at the same token, repeatedly adding diagnostics. CoHDL 0.8.1 makes parser recovery advance or stop, caps errors per file, and fixes a panic at the diagnostic-budget boundary. Truncated files produce fewer cascading errors, and pin or spec entries written outside their blocks receive targeted messages.

This matters when a person is midway through an edit and when an agent sends an incomplete candidate to cohdl check. A failed check should give the next repair step without leaving a process consuming memory. The parser regression work includes thousands of single-token insertions into valid source, checked for termination and bounded diagnostic output.

Preserve the facts in source footprints

Physical export now preserves source polygon pads and repeated placements belonging to one electrical contact. Explicitly unknown manufacturer and part-number facts remain unknown. When a source does not establish hole plating, manufacturing export refuses to guess; build --logical-only remains available for logical artifacts without a fabrication handoff.

The ICS-43434 opening stays open

The corrected mic@0.1.2 footprint uses a ground annulus with a 1.625 mm outer diameter and a 1.025 mm inner diameter, a separate 0.5 mm acoustic hole, and the manufacturer's segmented stencil pattern. The compiler change is needed too: KiCad custom-pad anchors for annular copper and segmented paste now sit inside the intended material. They no longer introduce a copper or paste dot at the centre of an acoustic opening.

cohdl self-update
cohdl update ./board --dep mic
cohdl build ./board --emit kicad_pcb

Rebuild after updating both the compiler and the package so the corrected geometry reaches the generated files. The release was checked in KiCad 10.0.4 with the microphone fixture and a 24-case pad/footprint rotation and board-side matrix, including reimported footprints; those fixtures reported zero DRC violations.

The microphone fix is separate from the ESP32 antenna exclusions introduced in CoHDL 0.9.0.
